Short answer
Tail rot is tissue death in the tail, starting at the tip. It shows as blackening at the tip, often on a tail that does not shed normally. Common causes are a tail injury or stuck shed that cuts off blood flow. It needs a vet: depending on how far it has spread, the vet may try to save the tail, remove the damaged part, or let the tip fall off. Check the tail tip after every shed.
What tail rot looks like
ReptiFiles describes the signs as blackening of the tail starting at the tip, and a tail that does not shed.1
Causes
The RSPCA warns that poor shedding can cut off blood supply on the feet and lead to lost toes, and that most shedding problems come down to hydration and humidity.2 The same mechanism can affect the tail tip.
What a vet may do
ReptiFiles treats tail rot as relatively serious and says to see a vet.1 Depending on how severe it is, the tail may be saved; otherwise the vet may recommend surgery or letting the dead tip fall off on its own.1
If the tail is bleeding, PetMD advises applying gentle pressure with a clean towel or gauze and taking your lizard to an exotics vet.3 While the stump heals, keep the enclosure very clean and swap loose substrate for paper towel.3
Prevention
- Check the tail tip and toes after every shed. If old skin stays stuck, ask a reptile vet for advice.2
- Support good sheds: keep your dragon well hydrated, and lightly spray the digging box to give a humid area without raising humidity across the whole enclosure.2
- Do not pull stuck skin. It can tear the new skin underneath; a five-minute soak in shallow, tepid water helps soften it.2
- Handle with care and never pick a dragon up by the tail.3
- House dragons alone, since cagemates can bite tails.2
Common questions
Can a bearded dragon regrow its tail?
Sources disagree. ReptiFiles says bearded dragons cannot regrow their tails, which is why it treats tail injuries as serious. PetMD's general lizard guide lists bearded dragons among lizards that can. Treat any loss of tail as permanent and get a vet's view.
My bearded dragon's tail is dark. Is it tail rot?
Not necessarily. Tail rot, as ReptiFiles describes it, is blackening that starts at the very tip, on a tail that does not shed normally. Dark markings elsewhere can simply be your dragon's pattern. If you are unsure, take a clear photo and ask your vet.
