Short answer
Adult female leopard geckos can produce infertile eggs even if they have never met a male. A gravid female's belly swells, and you may see two eggs through the skin. Give her a nest box of moist soil or a sand and soil mix to lay in, usually two eggs at a time. A healthy gravid female may eat less but stays bright and active. If she is weak, lethargic, straining or stops responding, she may be egg-bound and needs a vet.
Infertile eggs are normal
The RSPCA says female leopard geckos reaching adulthood may produce infertile eggs even without a male present.1 VCA notes that most pet reptiles brought to vets for egg-binding are single females with no exposure to a male.3
Signs she is gravid
- Her belly swells, and you may be able to see the eggs through it1
- Two eggs, one on each side, may show through the thin belly skin2
- She may eat less, but should stay bright, active and alert3
Do not confuse eggs with fat pads, which can look similar.2
Give her somewhere to lay
The RSPCA says it is very important to give her a nest box of moist soil or a sand and soil mix, or she may become egg-bound.1 Reptiles Magazine’s vet author recommends a moist vermiculite hide or nest box, which also helps with shedding.5
- Use a hide with an entrance big enough for her to get in and turn around.
- Keep the material damp but not wet, so a tunnel holds its shape.
- Place it where she can reach it easily, and check it daily for eggs.
- Females usually lay two eggs at a time.2
After she lays
- Remove the eggs. If there is any chance a male has had access, they may be fertile.
- Keep feeding her normally and dusting insects with calcium.
- Weigh her, and call a vet if she loses weight or seems weak afterwards.
Egg-binding (dystocia)
Egg-binding means a female cannot pass her eggs. It is a relatively common problem in reptiles and can be life-threatening.3
Causes include the wrong temperatures, too little UVB, the wrong humidity, no suitable nest site, too little calcium or protein, and dehydration. Age, poor muscle tone, injuries and abnormal eggs can also contribute.3
Signs: Vet Times lists a swollen abdomen with straining or lethargy.4 VCA adds that a female with dystocia usually stops eating, becomes weak, and can become unresponsive if not treated early.3
Treatment needs a vet, who will examine her and usually take blood tests and X-rays. Treatment can include fluids, calcium and hormone injections, or surgery if those do not work.3
Common questions
How many eggs do leopard geckos lay?
Reptiles Magazine's vet author says females usually lay two eggs at a time.
Are they eggs or fat pads?
Reptiles Magazine warns that two symmetrical fat pads on the belly can look like eggs to inexperienced keepers. Eggs are often visible as two shapes, one on each side, through the thin belly skin. If you are unsure, a vet can check, sometimes with an X-ray.
Why is my gravid leopard gecko not eating?
VCA says a healthy gravid reptile may not want to eat but should still be bright, active and alert. A female who stops eating and also becomes weak or lethargic needs a vet.
