Is My Bearded Dragon Male or Female? How to TellHow to tell a male bearded dragon from a female: femoral pores, hemipenal bulges, head size and beard color, why babies are hard to sex, and when to ask a vet.

Short answer

Sexing a bearded dragon under about three months old is difficult. In adults, VCA says males tend to have larger heads, darker beards and more prominent femoral pores on the undersides of the thighs, and are slightly larger overall. Males have two hemipenes, one on either side of the vent. If you are unsure, a reptile vet can confirm the sex at a checkup.

Babies are hard to sex

VCA says determining the sex of a bearded dragon under three months old is difficult.1 Wait until your dragon has grown, or ask a reptile vet.

Signs in adults

Feature Males Females
Femoral pores, under the thighs More prominent1 Less prominent
Head Larger1 Smaller
Beard Darker1 Usually lighter
Size Slightly larger overall1 Slightly smaller
Hemipenes Two, one on either side of the vent1 None

Femoral pores are small openings on the undersides of the thighs used for scent marking.1 In males they are usually larger and easier to see. The two hemipenes, the male reproductive organs, sit on either side of the vent.1

Behavior is a weaker clue. VCA describes arm waving and head bobbing as forms of communication, and notes that the beard can turn black when a dragon is ill, threatened or mating.1

Why it matters

  • Eggs. Females can develop eggs even if they have never met a male. Without somewhere to dig, a female can become egg-bound, which is serious.3 See bearded dragon eggs and egg-binding.
  • Housing. A male and female kept together nearly always mate, and two males can fight. ReptiFiles advises against housing dragons together at all.2

Common questions

Can females lay eggs without a male?

Yes. The RSPCA says it is quite common for female dragons to develop eggs even if they have never been with a male. Give an adult female a digging box so she can lay.

What about the flashlight method?

Many keepers shine a light through the base of the tail to look for the shadows of hemipenes. We have not found a veterinary source describing the method, so treat the result as a guess and confirm with a vet if it matters.

Why does it matter whether my dragon is male or female?

Mainly for health and housing. Adult females can produce eggs and need a place to lay them. And a male and female housed together will almost always mate, which is one more reason to keep dragons alone.
