Short answer
Trim a bearded dragon's nails when it walks on its nails instead of its foot pads, the nails curl sideways, or they keep snagging. Most dragons need it only a few times a year. Use small-animal nail clippers, hold the dragon calmly, take off only the sharp tip, and stay well away from the blood vessel inside the nail. If you are nervous, or if a nail bleeds, let a reptile vet do it.
Why trim at all
Trimmed claws help a dragon climb, prevent snags that can break toes, and spare you scratches.2 Stone or tile wears claws down; soft substrate does not.1
Signs the nails are too long
The Vet Desk’s vet-reviewed guide lists these signs:1
- Your dragon walks on its nails rather than its foot pads
- The nails turn to the left or right
- They often catch on surfaces
- They feel very sharp when you handle your dragon
- They break when it walks on flat surfaces
How often depends on the substrate and activity. Most dragons need a trim only a few times a year.1
The vet option
The Vet Desk notes that it is always best to have an exotics vet trim nails, and ReptiFiles says your vet should be happy to do it if you are worried.12 Ask the vet to show you how at your next checkup.
How to trim at home
- Use small-animal nail clippers. Human clippers can crack the nail and cut unevenly.1
- Hold your dragon calmly, with your palm under its belly. A helper makes it much easier.1
- Find the quick. Each nail has a blood vessel inside. Look for where the color of the nail changes, and stay well short of it.1
- Take off only the sharp tip. Then reassess. Remove thin slivers at a time rather than big chunks; you can always trim more later.1
- Take breaks. Do one foot or a few nails, then stop. It is fine to spread the job over several days.1
- Have styptic powder ready in case a nail bleeds.1
Making it easier
- A stone or tile floor helps file the nails down, so they need trimming less often than on soft substrate.1
Common questions
How often should I trim my bearded dragon's nails?
It varies with the substrate and how active your dragon is. The Vet Desk says most dragons need trims only a few times a year, more often on soft substrate and less on stone or tile, which wears the nails down.
Can I use human nail clippers?
The Vet Desk advises against it: human clippers can crack the nail and cut unevenly. Use small-animal clippers.
What if I cut the quick?
The Vet Desk says a bleeding nail needs prompt veterinary care. Styptic powder can help stop the bleeding while you contact your vet.
