Do Leopard Geckos Need UVB? What the Research Shows

Do leopard geckos need UVB lighting? What two studies found, how much UVB sources recommend, which lamp to buy, where to mount it and how to keep it safe.

Checked against 11 sources

Short answer

UVB is recommended, though not required. Studies show leopard geckos make vitamin D3 from UVB, but they can also grow normally on dietary vitamin D3. If you add UVB, use a low-output tube over the warm third to half of the enclosure, leave shaded areas where the UV falls to zero, with hides at both ends, and replace the lamp on schedule.

Why this question has two answers

For years, leopard geckos were kept without UVB because they are most active at dusk and spend the day hiding. Many lived long lives on calcium with vitamin D3. So “they don’t need it” was never simply wrong.

What changed is the evidence that they use UVB when they get it. Today the question is less “can they survive without it” and more “does it make their care better”. Veterinary care sheets in the UK now include UVB in their standard setup.456 VCA calls it “not required but recommended”.3

What the research found

Study 1 (2018). Twelve adult male leopard geckos were split into two groups. One group got two hours of UVB a day, one hour at dawn and one at dusk. After 30 days, that group had significantly higher blood levels of vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D3) than the group without UVB.2

Study 2 (2020). Juvenile geckos were raised from hatching to six months. All got vitamin D3 in their diet; one group also got low-level UVB. The UVB group had higher vitamin D levels: 61 nmol/L against 38 nmol/L. But growth and weight gain were the same in both groups, and neither group showed signs of metabolic bone disease.1

What that means for you. Leopard geckos do make vitamin D3 in their skin from UVB. Dietary D3 can be enough for normal growth in the first six months. Whether the higher vitamin D levels from UVB lead to stronger bones or better immunity over a lifetime has not been studied yet.1

How much UVB

Sources agree on low output but disagree on the exact level.

Source Recommendation
RSPCA5 2–5% tube; UV index about 0.7 at the basking spot, falling to zero in shade
Zen Habitats9 UV index 0.4–0.8 at basking, never above 1.0; below 0.7 for albinos
Reptiles Magazine10 Ferguson Zone 1, the lowest UV group
University of Liverpool vet practice6 2% UVB bulb directly over the basking spot
Royal Veterinary College4 Low-output lamp, for example 6%, at the maker’s distance
ReptiFiles7 UV index 2.0–3.0

The Ferguson zones come from a 2016 tool that sorts 254 reptile and amphibian species into four groups by how much UV they meet in the wild.11 Most sources above place leopard geckos at the low end. ReptiFiles is the outlier with a higher target.7

What we suggest: start low, at a UV index of about 0.7 at the basking spot, as in the RSPCA guidance.5 Make sure the gecko can get out of the UV completely. The only way to know the real UV index is to measure it with a UV index meter at the basking spot.5

Where to mount the lamp

Where UVB should and should not reach in a leopard gecko enclosureSide view. A UVB tube sits over the warm half of the enclosure. UV is strongest on the basking spot below it and fades toward the cool end. UV falls to zero in the shade and inside the hides, so the gecko can choose how much UV it gets.UVB tube over the warm halfBasking spot, strongest UVhidehidehideMore UVNo UVUV falls to zero in the shade

  • Mount the tube over the warm end, covering one third to one half of the enclosure length.5
  • Place it at the distance the lamp maker recommends.4 VCA gives 10–12 in (25–30 cm) from the gecko as a general guide.3
  • Keep the cool end shaded, so the UV falls to zero there, and put hides at both ends.5
  • Avoid glass or plastic between the lamp and the gecko; both block UVB.6
  • If the lamp sits on a mesh lid, expect it to lose part of its output; the amount depends on the mesh.8

Choosing a lamp

  • Linear tubes (T5 or T8) spread UV over a wide strip, which suits a gradient. The RSPCA specifies a tube.5
  • Low percentage. Look for 2–6%.456
  • Length. Pick a tube about one third to one half the length of the enclosure.5
  • Not coil bulbs as your only UV, unless the maker gives a UV index chart at distance. You need to know what the gecko actually gets.

Day length and replacement

  • Run UVB with the day lights, about 12 hours on and 12 off, on a timer.45
  • UV output fades before the visible light does. Replace the lamp on the maker’s schedule; one vet practice suggests every 12–18 months,6 and Zen Habitats every 6–12 months.9
  • Check the output with a UV index meter if you have one.5

Pale and red-eyed morphs

Albino and red-eyed morphs can be more sensitive to bright light. The RSPCA suggests asking a vet before using UVB with red-eyed geckos,5 and Zen Habitats keeps their basking UV index below 0.7.9 Offer extra shade and watch for squinting or avoiding the light.

If you don’t use UVB

Then the diet has to supply vitamin D3. Use a calcium powder with D3 or a reptile multivitamin that contains it, at the label dose. Vitamins and minerals can be overdosed, so follow the label and avoid using several D3 products at once.5 The 2020 study is the evidence that geckos can grow normally this way, at least through their first six months.1

Common questions

Can a leopard gecko live without UVB?

Many have, on a diet with vitamin D3 supplements. The 2020 study found normal growth on dietary D3 alone over six months. UVB raises vitamin D levels further, and its long-term benefits are still being studied.

What percent UVB bulb do leopard geckos need?

Veterinary care sheets recommend a low-output lamp: 2–5% (RSPCA), 2% (University of Liverpool vet practice) or around 6% (RVC). The right choice also depends on the distance from the lamp to the gecko.

Do albino leopard geckos need UVB?

They can use it, but they may be more sensitive to bright light. The RSPCA suggests asking a vet about red-eyed morphs, and Zen Habitats keeps the basking UV index for albinos below 0.7.

How long should the UVB be on each day?

About 12 hours a day on a timer, matching the day light cycle in the RVC and RSPCA care sheets.

My usual UVB brand is out of stock. What can I use?

The care sheets we cite specify output rather than brand: a 2–5% tube (RSPCA), 2% (University of Liverpool vet practice) or about 6% (RVC). A reptile UVB tube in that range, mounted at the maker's distance, follows that guidance.
