Is My Leopard Gecko Male or Female? How to TellHow to sex a leopard gecko: pre-anal pores, hemipenal bulges, size and behavior, the size at which sexing becomes reliable, and the mistakes new owners make.

Short answer

Hatchlings cannot be sexed reliably, but once a leopard gecko is about 5 to 6 inches long it is usually easy. Turn it gently and look at the underside. Males have a row of small pre-anal pores just in front of the vent and two bulges behind it, where the hemipenes sit. Females have neither. Markings and color do not tell you the sex.

When you can tell

Hatchlings cannot be sexed reliably. Once a leopard gecko is about 5 to 6 inches long, sexing is straightforward.12

How to check

Hold your gecko gently and turn it so you can see the underside near the vent, the opening at the base of the tail. Support its body and never hold it by the tail.1

Feature Males Females
Pre-anal pores A row of small dots just in front of the vent12 None2
Hemipenal bulges Two oval swellings at the base of the tail, behind the vent12 None2
Neck Thicker and heavier1 Slimmer
Behavior Rapid tail vibration as a display1

Females may show two eggs, one on each side, through the skin of the belly when gravid.1

Common mistakes

  • Judging by color or spots. Markings vary by morph and do not indicate sex.1
  • Mistaking fat pads for eggs. Two symmetrical fat pads on the belly can look like eggs.1
  • Sexing too young. Wait until the gecko is about 5 to 6 inches long.1

Why it matters

  • Housing. A male and female should not share an enclosure unless you intend to breed them, and even then only temporarily.2 Our care guide explains why leopard geckos are best kept alone.
  • Eggs. Adult females can produce infertile eggs even without a male, and need a moist nest box to lay in.3 See leopard gecko eggs without a male.

Common questions

Can you tell a leopard gecko's sex from its color or spots?

No. Reptiles Magazine's vet author says markings vary by color morph and do not indicate sex.

Does incubation temperature decide the sex?

Yes. Leopard gecko sex is determined by the temperature the egg is incubated at. Reptiles Magazine notes that many breeders incubate to produce more females, so more females are often for sale.

Why does my female look like she has eggs?

She may. Adult females can produce infertile eggs without a male, says the RSPCA. But Reptiles Magazine warns that two fat pads on the belly can look like eggs to inexperienced keepers. If in doubt, ask a vet.
